Janie:
Janie is the protagonist is the story. Most of the events that happen in the story happen to Janie and they affect her life enormously. She is also a dynamic character; her character has a change in the attitude and point of view by the end of the story. The three marriages and a chance at true love have changed her. She goes from believing that she will never find true love to meeting Tea Cake and realizing that age and position in society have nothing to do with true love.

Logan Killicks:
Logan is a flat character; he never learns any lesson and he never changes his character in any dramatic way. He becomes the first “enemy” of Janie. She begins to despise him because all he wants her for is to work for him and to be his property. She also hated him because she was forced into the marriage by her grandmother.
Joe Starks:
Joe is the antagonist. He makes the marriage between himself
and Janie sound wonderful at first and she believes him. She probably believes
she is escaping from the unhappy marriage with Logan. During the marriage Janie
comes to realize that Joe only sees her as his property and will not allow her
freedom, although Joe showers her with presents and riches. But that’s not what
Janie truly wants and she despises him for it. Ultimately Joe never changes by
the marriage, but he causes Janie to change immensely.
Tea Cake:
Tea Cake:
Tea Cake is a round character. A reader gets to know a little about his character and his values. He also changes Janie’s beliefs and character forever. He gives her the life that she always dreamed of, to truly love and be loved. He convinces her that age and position have nothing to do with love. He also convinces her that he wanted nothing to do with her wealth but only herself. Joe’s opinions and character seldom change in the story, but he has a huge impact in Janie’s character.
Pheoby:
Pheoby is a flat character. As a reader, not much is discovered about her. It is known that she is Janie’s best friend. Janie has enough confidence is her to confide her life story to her. Through this it is obvious that Pheoby has a great importance in her life, even if much of her life and character is not made known to the reader.
Grandmother:
The grandmother is a flat character; not much about her is made known to the character. Although she is an antagonist because she changes the course of Janie’s life forever by forcing her into marriage with Logan and she despises her for it.
